5 Design Ideas to Decorate Your Living Room (8/19/2022)

If you’ve recently moved into a new place or you’re looking to redecorate, here are some design tips that will help you create the living room of your dreams!

Start off with measurements and a purpose.

A must-do whenever it comes to decorating is measuring your space and using painters tape to mark where your pieces will go — this helps you get a feel for how everything will fit. Understanding the purpose of your living room is important too. Try asking yourself these questions before going shopping:

  • What activities will I be doing in this room?
  • How many people will be using this space?
  • How often will I be hosting parties and events?

Style your living room with a rug (or two).

Adding a rug to your living room can instantly change the look of your space. If you have enough room, a large rug with all your furniture on it or just the front legs are common layouts. Other styles to try are layering rugs or the “float,” aka only placing it under the coffee table.

Tip: Try textured and printed rugs to add dimension to a room, such as jute or faux fur. For a more in-depth guide to rug styling, check out this blog post!

Experiment with a mixture of different design styles.

Do you enjoy both bright wall colors and neutral fabrics? Or maybe you find yourself window shopping for both vintage furniture and modern art? Try making a mood board of the interior styles you like and fine-tune it to your tastes to create a room that’s uniquely yours.

Try out different lighting pieces and wall art.

When it comes to lighting, there are endless styles to choose from. Tall, curved lighting pieces add shape and dimension, whereas traditional lamps are a timeless choice. Having lamps in varying heights will lend interest to a room while also balancing the light throughout your space.

With wall art, you can either create a statement look with a gallery wall or go minimal with a few frames around the room. Try to choose prints or artwork that is not only sentimental (like family photos), but also distinctly reflect your personality and style.

Choose movable pieces to bring flexibility to your living room.

By choosing easy-to-move pieces, you’ll easily create a dynamic space that can adapt whenever needed. Furniture items such as an ottoman, coffee table, or chairs are nice additions that can be moved around if you’re hosting.

Pick a color palette that adds depth and balance.

The right colors can really change the mood and atmosphere of a room. Choosing colors that complement each other is important. Try to mix lights and darks for added depth or pick contrasting neutrals that will bring a rich color palette to the space without being overwhelming. Adding pops of colors will also brighten up your living room.
