Meet Our Stain Resistant & Washable Sofa! (8/29/2021)

Mar 24, 2023 Sophie Kennedy

Did you know that our cushion and pillow covers are removable to make them easier to clean? And that our sustainable fabrics are inherently stain resistant? Here's what you need to know about our fabrics and some easy ways to clean them!

[Note: both our Recycled Velvet and Upcycled Poly fabrics are not pre-treated to avoid harmful chemicals and off-gassing.]

Recycled Velvet:

Our Recycled Velvet fabric can be cleaned with gentle household cleaning products. If possible, place a clean towel behind the fabric to absorb any excess moisture. We recommend spraying and dabbing all the way to the seams to avoid any water rings from drying. This fabric can also be machine washed on delicate with cold water, then air dry or tumble dry with no heat.

Upcycled Poly:

Our Upcycled Poly fabric is inherently stain-resistant and can be cleaned with household cleaning products, including a bleach solution, without being damaged. Most general house cleaners will work, as long as they aren't solvent-based (most are not). We recommend spraying and dabbing all the way to the seams to avoid any water rings from drying. Alternatively, you can also hand wash with cold water and air dry - no heat. Do not iron our Upcycled Poly!

How to Make a Bleach Solution For Our Upcycled Poly Fabric:

Use a ration of 1 oz. bleach to 30 oz. of water in a clean spray bottle. If possible, place a clean towel behind the fabric to absorb any excess moisture. Set the nozzle to a fan spray pattern and wet the entire side of the cover where the stain is. Then wipe the entire cover with a clean cloth to remove any excess moisture. Spray the same area with clean water to rinse out the bleach solution from the fabric. Wipe the entire cover again with a clean cloth to remove any excess moisture. Allow the cover to air dry. This will remove most stains.

Sustainability points: washing on cold and air drying saves energy too!

Heat Tolerance

Both our Upcycled Poly and Recycled Velvet are NOT heat tolerant.

Please be cautious of any heat source you place near or on the fabrics as it can damage or melt the material. For this reason we recommend air-drying the covers without any heat applied.

Note: You may carefully steam your covers if you continually move the steamer and do not leave it on one spot for an extended time or too close to the fabric.

Transfer Pilling

Our Upcycled Poly fabric has an abrasion resistance of 75,000 double rubs. What that means is it’s built to last and you shouldn’t have issues with your Sabai product pilling.

However, some clothing or blankets/throws may create pill and lint balls that could get stuck in the weave of our Upcycled Poly fabric and make it seem like your sofa is pilling. The good news is that this is very easy to solve! If pill balls accumulate on your furniture, we recommend using a tool such as this fabric shaver/lint remover to get it looking brand new again. A sharp razor blade also works to remove pilling, but this requires being slow and careful as to not damage the fabric and may not be as effective.

Furry Friends Welcome

We're happy to say that our fabrics are scratch-resistant! However, they are not scratch-proof — this just means that long-term use and scratching might lead to eventual scratches on our sofas. If you have pets, we recommend our velvet options as our poly fabric has a slightly larger weave that could snag more easily if your little one is a serious scratcher.

But this doesn't mean you'll have to replace your entire couch! Our Repair Don't Replace program offers parts so you can replace any damaged areas (plus, our sofa arms can be repurposed as pet beds — a great silver lining!).

In case of any permanent damage, check out our Repair Don't Replace Program to shop for repairable parts as well as custom slipcovers.

I love your sectionals! But before I purchase do you have any recommendations for cat scratching—I mean is there any thing I could put over the corners where kitty likes to scratch? Could I order a custom something?

Love my new sectional and want to keep it looking great for as long as possible! Is the fabric pretreated to resist stains and/or do you recommend treating it with a fabric or upholstery protector?
