If you have ever moved, or are planning to move, you know that it's an exciting but extremely stressful endeavor. Suddenly, all those socks and gadgets you lost throughout the years pop up again, and you have a million things to fit into your minivan. Fortunately, with some planning and clever hacks, you can streamline your move and make it a little smoother.
In this blog post, we'll share four of our favorite moving hacks that will help you move with ease.
Hack 1: Create a Moving Timeline and Checklist
Before you even start packing, your first step should be to create a moving timeline and checklist. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you don't forget anything. Start by setting a moving date and work backward from there. Break down the tasks into smaller, manageable steps, such as sorting through belongings, packing room by room, notifying utility companies, and hiring movers.
Having this checklist will help to declutter your mind, so you don't have to worry about having hundreds of tasks to do at once.
Hack 2: Declutter and Downsize
Think of moving as an opportunity to declutter -- do you really need those craft supplies you bought 10 years ago at a yard sale and are now sitting in your basement untouched?
Before you start packing, go through each room and sort your items into categories: keep, donate/sell, and toss. Be ruthless in your decisions and consider whether each item is worth the space it will take up in your new place. In other words, channel your inner Marie Kondo! By decluttering, you can save space, time, and effort when packing. You can even consider selling some of your old items, so they can be loved by someone else!
Hack 3: Boxes on Boxes on Boxes
Never underestimate the number of boxes you need. Packing efficiently is a crucial aspect of a successful move, and one method you can use to simplify the process is the "box-in-a-box" method. Instead of packing items in loose bags or individually, consider packing entire drawers or containers into large boxes. For instance, all of your utensils can go into a box next to your box of pots and pans. This not only saves time, but can also be extremely useful when you are unpacking.
Hack 4: Label Everything!
I never used to do this, but then would always have a hard time remembering where I put certain objects. A strategic labeling system can make unpacking so much more manageable, even if it's a little extra effort during the packing process. Using color-coded labels or simply writing down on a sticky note what each box contains can be so helpful. This can prevent you from having to open every box to find your grandmother's beloved soap dish (speaking from personal experience).
All in all, moving apartments can definitely be a stressful ordeal, but there are ways that you can make it a little bit easier. With these moving hacks, you can navigate the process more efficiently. Let us know if you try any of these hacks during your next move!
