The Holiday originated in the late 19th century, when labor unions were fighting for better working conditions and shorter hours, and the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in New York City on September 5, 1882, after Peter J. McGuire, a labor union leader, proposed a national holiday. Over time, it spread to different states and in 1894, it was declared a federal holiday by President Grover Cleveland. 

So, in addition to its end-of-summer connotations, Labor Day is a time to reflect on the importance of American manufacturing, sustainability, ethical labor practices, and the celebration of skilled craftsmanship.
