Do This, Not That: Sustainable Swaps for Your Space

Sep 24, 2024 Kelly McGeehan

Let’s talk trash: we make tons of it (literally). In fact, the average American is on track to produce 102 tons of trash in their lifetime.

While it may seem like efforts to minimize our environmental footprint make little difference in the shadow of big corporations, your day to day choices can significantly reduce the amount of waste you produce in the long run. Today we’re covering 10 eco-swaps you can make in your home to reduce your environmental impact and save money.

Do this, not that: 10 sustainable swaps for your home

[Honey (White Oak)]

Below are 10 win-wins for the planet and your wallet.

1- Do: invest in bamboo bed linen

Not: synthetic, polyester sheets

Swap your synthetic bedding for bamboo linens. Bamboo is soft, breathable, hypoallergenic, and great for regulating temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It’s also durable and will last longer than any synthetic options.

2- Do: hang it up to dry

Not: put it in the dryer

Drying clothes has a laundry list of benefits: it reduces your carbon footprint, extends the life of your clothes, and saves a ton of money in gas and electric bills. Run a clothesline outside or use a collapsible rack indoors. If hanging everything is too much work, start with just your undergarments and socks.

3- Do: toss in dryer balls

Not: Single-use dryer sheets

A little wool goes a long way. Swap your single-use dryer sheets with wool dryer balls. They reduce waste and help soak up moisture to reduce your drying time!

4- Do: opt for reusable cotton rounds

Not: single-use cotton pads

Single-use wipes and cotton pads are inexpensive but add to your environmental footprint and expenses over time. Reduce both by switching to reusable makeup rounds. You can put them in a mesh bag and throw them in the washer for easy cleaning.

5- Do: choose eco-friendly cleaning products

Not: toxic, harsh chemicals

One of the most important eco-swaps you can make is within your cleaning routine. Opt for products free of plastic and harsh chemicals for a greener and cleaner home. You can find the dirt on cleaning products and Sabai-approved tips for finding eco-friendly alternatives here

6- Do: toss into your compost bin

Not: the trash can

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure (or, your garden’s). Composting prevents food waste from ending up in landfills where it releases harmful methane gas. It also doubles as a great soil enhancer for your garden.

7- Do: buy beeswax wraps

Not: single-use sandwich bags

Beeswax wraps are the bee’s knees. They’re reusable, waterproof, and moldable, so they fit around any item or container. They can cover leftovers, wrap sandwiches or fruit, and go in the fridge for easy storage. One wrap can last up to a year with proper care!

8- Do: use silicone food covers

Not: plastic wrap

Swap plastic wrap and aluminum foil for silicone food covers to ensure eco-friendly ease. Silicone food covers can stretch to any container and ensure a tight seal. You can also bring collapsible silicone food containers to restaurants instead of using single-use takeout containers. Bye, soggy leftovers!

9- Do: buy reusable paper towels

Not: disposable paper towels

Paper makes up a quarter of landfills. Cut down on your contribution by swapping disposable paper towels for reusable ones. Not only do they work better, but they’re quick drying and knick bacteria growth before it can begin.

10- Do: switch to LED light bulbs

Not: incandescents

This is a simple swap that anyone can do. LED light bulbs use less energy and last far longer than incandescents, saving your wallet and the planet over time.

Our day to day choices affect the planet more than we think. With these simple eco-swaps, you can do your part in reducing your carbon footprint and helping your wallet at the same time.
