The products you’re using to clean your home may be contributing to a toxic environment. Keep reading for tips on creating a greener and healthier home.
The dirt behind cleaning products
Household cleaning products can be surprisingly toxic. Many products contain chemicals that are flammable, corrosive, or pose risks to our health. While effects are typically mild like headaches or throat and eye irritation, some can be serious. For instance, one study found over 500 VOCs (volatile organic compounds) across 30 cleaning products linked to respiratory conditions, increased risk of cancer, and reproductive damage. This included conventional products AND products labeled “green.”
Some cleaning products are more toxic than others. The most toxic culprits include:
- Air fresheners
- Chlorine bleach
- Dishwasher liquid
- Detergent
- Aerosol spray products, like disinfectant spray
- Rug and upholstery cleaners
- Furniture and floor polish
Eco-friendly cleaning tips
Read the fine print
Buying products labeled “clean” isn’t always enough. In fact, U.S. manufacturers are not required by law to list every ingredient in their products. It’s important to read labels and do your own research. Steer clear of any products containing VOCs, irritants, flammable ingredients, and artificial fragrances. You can also lean on reliable sources; the EPA provides a list of cleaning products that meet its Safer Choice requirements.
Minimize product waste
Reduce waste (and help your wallet) by investing in reusable or washable cleaning products. Try swapping single-use wipes with reusable rags or microfiber cloths that can go straight into the waster. Opting for glass spray bottles instead of single-use plastic allows you to refill them again and again.
Opt for homemade cleaners
Eco-friendly cleaning products aside, the best way to ensure your routine is clean and non-toxic is by making your own cleaners. While soap and warm water can go a long way, pantry staples like baking soda, vinegar, and lemon can clean virtually any surface. Baking soda is great for scrubbing, vinegar and water can clean glass, and lemon provides a fresh scent.
To create a sustainable and non-toxic home, making these changes to your cleaning routine is a good place to start.
