The City Entry Bench reimagines Sabai's City table legs as storage underneath a solid Ash wood waterfall bench. As part of the exercise to recontextualize Sabai's existing City table legs, I wanted to investigate opportunities that went beyond using the existing parts as furniture legs. The robust construction and material of the existing pieces led me to discover their use as additional storage. The final design is a balancing act between a delicate wooden bench in harmony with the strong lines and physical weight of the legs, now placed perpendicularly to their intended orientation. To reestablish the visual lightness of the piece, the legs are separated by a specific but crucial gap, playing with the viewer's perception of these pieces floating in space as if they are cantilevered off of the impossibly thin leg. Wherever possible within the design, visual weight is removed to enhance the play between materiality and physical mass.
