Ko Planter reimagines Sabai’s City Table steel legs as a planter and miniature landscape, inspired by one of my favorite New York City summer traditions, Second Sundays. On the second Sunday of each month during the summer, LGBTQ+ New Yorkers take over Sheep Meadow in Central Park, laying out in the grass (usually in their skimpy swimwear) and catching up with friends that we haven’t seen in a while. I wanted to capture a little piece of that tradition with handmade ceramic figures lounging around the planter beneath the shade of their own little “tree.” Made with Sabai’s powder-coated steel legs, Baltic birch plywood, and ceramic pieces handmade in Williamsburg. The name Ko means “opening” or “hole” in Chinese, a reference to the circular opening at the center of the piece where this idyllic little landscape comes to life.
