Elevate Your Space With These 3 Design Tips

Oct 10, 2023 Carina Sun

At Sabai, we believe that your furniture should be your lifelong companion, and your home an extension of yourself. When your home becomes cluttered, or you simply need a change of scenery, it's easy to incorporate a few small changes that will completely change the vibe of your room. Whether you're moving into a new place or looking to refresh your current living space, here are three essential, easy-to-apply design tips that we know will help you elevate any part of your home.

1. Incorporate Biophilic Design (AKA Nature)

Plants and greenery are an incredible way to liven up a space, and offers you an opportunity to buy those succulents you have been eyeing for a while. The concept of biophilic design is to essentially "increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment through the use of direct nature, indirect nature, and space and place conditions." This may be as easy as buying a few houseplants or potted trees. You could also consider introducing greenery in a striking manner by creating a living wall -- which not only looks appealing, but also can purify the air and create a healthier indoor environment. You can also consider opting for furniture and decorations crafted from natural materials like wood, bamboo, and hemp to mimic the feel of the outdoors.

2. Embrace Minimalism

For a lot of homeowners, it's easy to build up a cluttered environment over the years. Collections of papers and trinkets gathered from memorable events scattered throughout your space. An easy fix is to create an intentional space for those items, while creating a clutter-free environment. When doing this, it's important to declutter with purpose -- only keeping items that serve a specific purpose or bring you joy (like the Marie Kondo method). Minimalism can also come through in your color choices -- for example choosing a neutral color scheme with earthy tones like white, grey, and brown. Introduce pops of color through statement pieces like throw cushions or plants.

3. Introduce Accent Pieces

One of the quickest and easiest ways to refresh the look of a space is introducing statement pieces. In order to do this, you should first define a focal point -- choosing one standout item that you want to serve as the room's center piece. Keep the rest of the space simple, which will really bring out the uniqueness of your statement piece. It can also prevent the overall space from feeling cluttered. Also, have fun choosing your statement piece! Select a piece that resonates with your personal style and feels a little bit out of your usual comfort zone. Shopping for vintage pieces is always a great way to find unique items, while also contributing to sustainability.
