Sabai Elevate Natural vs. Medley vs. Ecobalanza: The Honest Comparison

Arrow Thin Right Icon

If you're shopping for a sofa built from genuinely natural materials - no polyurethane foam, no synthetic fabric, no petrochemical anything - you've probably landed on the same short list: Ecobalanza, Medley, and Sabai's Elevate Natural Collection. These are the brands that come up consistently when material health researchers and non-toxic living guides write about truly plastic-free furniture.

They're not the same product, and the differences matter. Here's a breakdown.

Materials: Where Each Brand Stands

Cushion Fill

All three brands use natural latex as the primary cushion fill — but not all natural latex is the same on paper.

Medley uses GOLS-certified (Global Organic Latex Standard) natural Dunlop latex. GOLS certification means the latex is third-party verified to be organic and processed without harmful chemicals.

Sabai Elevate Natural uses natural latex that is GOLS-certified, Fair Trade-certified, and OEKO-TEX certified - meeting the same organic standard as Medley while adding Fair Trade (fair labor conditions for rubber tappers) and OEKO-TEX (tested free of harmful substances) on top.

Ecobalanza offers natural latex as one of several fill options, alongside kapok, down, wool, and cotton. Their approach is the most material-flexible and the most rigorously natural, though it comes with the longest lead time and highest price.

The Sabai Elevate Natural pairs natural latex with Cocolok coconut fiber (a compressed coconut husk material that provides natural firmness) and cotton fiber - a layered approach that no other brand in this comparison uses. Whether that's a pro or con depends on whether you want the simplicity of a single-material build or the functional benefits of the combination.

One note worth flagging: Medley wraps their latex in organic wool, and Ecobalanza offers wool and down as fill options. If you're looking for a vegan sofa, the Elevate Natural is the only option in this comparison — its cushion build uses no animal products.

Fabric

On certifications, all three brands use OEKO-TEX certified fabric. Ecobalanza and Medley additionally carry GOTS certification — third-party verified to be free of synthetic dyes, finishes, and fiber treatments from farm to finished textile, which is the most comprehensive standard available for natural textiles. Sabai's fabric is OCS-certified (verifying certified organic fiber content) and independently tested to confirm it is PFAS-free, but does not carry GOTS. The practical difference: GOTS verifies every processing step; OCS + OEKO-TEX + confirmed PFAS-free testing covers organic content and final-product safety.

On fabric options, the brands diverge. Medley offers organic cotton, linen, and cotton/linen blends in solid colors. Ecobalanza is fully custom — fabric options are available but not publicly specified. Sabai offers its hemp and cotton blend in a range of solid colors as well as stripe patterns, making it the only brand in this comparison with a patterned option. If aesthetics and variety matter alongside material standards, Sabai has the broadest selection.

Frame

Ecobalanza is the most rigorous here: solid hardwood only, no engineered wood whatsoever, with zero-VOC glues or no glues at all (they use stitching and construction techniques where possible).

Medley uses solid alder for the main frame members with formaldehyde-free plywood where needed, and no-VOC adhesives throughout.

Sabai Elevate Natural uses PureBond, a formaldehyde-free engineered hardwood product that uses a soy-based adhesive instead of urea-formaldehyde. It's a meaningful improvement over standard plywood, but it's not solid wood.

Where Sabai Elevate Natural Wins

Being honest about trade-offs cuts both ways. There are things the Elevate Natural does that neither Medley nor Ecobalanza offer.

Price. At $4,695 for a standard sofa, the Elevate Natural sits within Medley's range ($3,765–$6,205) and well below Ecobalanza ($5,000–$12,000+). It's not a budget sofa, but within this category of fully natural construction it's competitively priced — and unlike Ecobalanza, it's not custom-order only.

Modular construction and slipcovers. The Elevate Natural is built to be reconfigured and repaired. Cushion covers are removable and replaceable. The frame is modular. Sabai's Repair Don't Replace program means that if something wears out, you replace the part — not the sofa. Neither Medley nor Ecobalanza offer this. For a piece of furniture you're buying because you care about longevity and waste, this is a significant functional advantage.

Domestic sourcing. All three brands manufacture in the U.S.

Lead time. Sabai's 3–5 week lead time is significantly faster than Medley (6–8 weeks) and Ecobalanza (12–20+ weeks). If you need the sofa before the end of the quarter, Sabai is the only realistic option in this category.

Vegan-friendly construction. Medley's cushion build uses organic wool; Ecobalanza offers wool and down as fill options. The Elevate Natural's cushion is built entirely from plant-based materials — GOLS-certified natural latex, coconut fiber, and cotton — with no animal products. It's the only fully vegan option in this comparison.

Fabric variety. Medley's natural fabric options come in solid colors only. Ecobalanza is fully custom with unspecified fabric options. Sabai's hemp and cotton blend is available in a range of solid colors as well as stripe patterns — the only patterned option in this category. If you want a natural sofa that doesn't look like a natural sofa, Sabai is the only one that gives you that choice.

Who Should Choose What

Choose Ecobalanza if certifications and maximum material purity are the priority and price is secondary. This is the most rigorous option available in the U.S. market — solid wood, GOTS fabric, zero synthetic inputs — and it's priced accordingly. It's also fully custom, so it suits buyers who want to specify every dimension and material.

Choose Medley if GOTS-certified fabric is your specific benchmark and you want a solid alder hardwood frame with no-VOC adhesives throughout. Their material transparency is exceptional and the GOTS certification covers the full fabric production chain in a way OCS + OEKO-TEX doesn't.

Choose Sabai Elevate Natural if you want fully natural, vegan construction — GOLS-certified latex with no animal products anywhere in the build — along with OCS and OEKO-TEX certified fabric confirmed PFAS-free, modular design, and a repair program. Also the right call if lead time matters: 3–5 weeks vs. 6–8 for Medley. The remaining cert difference from Medley is the fabric: OCS + OEKO-TEX vs. GOTS.

The Honest Bottom Line

These three brands are not competing for the same buyer. Ecobalanza is the most rigorous option — solid wood, GOTS fabric, zero synthetic inputs — and priced accordingly. Medley is the choice for buyers who want GOTS-certified fabric and a solid hardwood frame with no-VOC adhesives. Sabai Elevate Natural matches Medley on GOLS-certified latex (and adds Fair Trade and OEKO-TEX on top), uses OCS and OEKO-TEX certified hemp and cotton fabric confirmed PFAS-free, and adds modular construction and a repair program — all at a competitive price point and a 3–5 week lead time.

The right question isn't which brand has the most certifications. It's which certifications matter to you, and what else you need the sofa to do.
